World Sleep 07 Report: September 2007
The Fifth Quadrennial World Sleep Congress (Sep 2nd – 6th) was held at the Cairns Convention Centre and was the first in history to be held outside Europe and North America.
The WFSRSMS (World Federation of Sleep Research & Sleep Medicine Societies) was founded in 1987 and member societies are listed below:
- American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM)
- Asian Sleep Research Society (ASRS)
- Canadian Sleep Society (CSS)
- European Sleep Research Society (ESRS)
- Federation of Latin American Sleep Societies (FLASS)
- Sleep Research Society (US) – (SRS)
The meeting was also a substitute for the Annual Australasian Sleep Association (usually held at this time of the year), so there was a guaranteed attendance of members from Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region.
1500 delegates attended and the level of interest for the SomnoDent™ MAS was very high. There was strong Asian and European connection along with all the major Respiratory Physicians and Dentists from Australia and New Zealand.
For the first time, there was a full day on Dental Sleep Medicine (25% of the conference). This underlined the growing importance of the role of Splints in the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea.
The SomnoMed stand was the most visited stand and there was incredible interest from Respiratory Physicians, Dentists and Sleep Technicians. There is a definite need out there for patients who have mild to moderate OSA as well as the huge number of patients who are non-CPAP compliant.
The meeting was a success in recognizing SomnoMed as a major player in the OSA market and the future potential of the company.
