Snoring

What is snoring?

Snoring occurs when the soft tissues at the back of your throat become too relaxed and vibrate. The vibrations caused by your breathing results in the snoring sound.

There are several other factors that could contribute to, or be the cause of your snoring:

  • A narrow airway-due to your natural build
  • Weight gain or a large neck-this puts pressure on your airway passage
  • Alcohol-relaxes the soft tissues in your airway
  • Age-muscle tone decreases as you get older
  • Sleep posture-sleeping on your back encourages the muscles at the back of your throat to relax
  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea-which snoring is a sympton of

Snoring and Sleep Apnea

Snoring could also be a symptom of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) -a very serious sleep disordered breathing condition.

SomnoMed provides treatments for Snoring and OSA, but it is important for you to know which condition you have before you select the SomnoMed treatment that's best for you.

SomnoSnore is a treatment for primary snoring only therefore SomnoMed recommends that patients are diagnosed by a Sleep Physician before undertaking SomnoMed therapy.

How do I know if I snore?

If you have a bed partner then it is easy to find out if you're a snorer. However, if you sleep alone then it may be more difficult. If you feel that your sleep is disturbed and you feel unrefreshed when you wake up, then speak to your SomnoMed Dentist.

Side effects

Loud and frequent snoring can result in a sore throat and poor, restless sleep.

However, it is often the emotional side effects of snoring that patients find most troubling.

Yours or your partner's snoring is a problem if you find that you:

  • Argue about yours or their snoring

  • Sleep in separate bedrooms

  • Feel embarrassed about travelling
